How to Tie a Bow Tie

The bow tie knot is usually work in order to present an elegant and formal appearance. When you hear the term "black tie occasion" it usually refers to an event such as a wedding where it is common place to wear a tuxedo with a bow tie. A bow tie should not be wider than the widest area of your neck. The tie should also not go past the tip of the collar of your shirt. So how do you tie a bow tie? Here are the steps.

1. Place the tie around the neck. Make sure the tie is placed under the collar. Next grab the ends of the tie. The end on your right should be about one and a half inches lower than the left end

2. Cross the lone end of the tie over the short end. It is recommended that you cross the tie near your neck. Create just enough area that will allow you to easily work with the tie. The bow should not dangle in the front.

3. The longer end should be passed through the loop. A simple overhand knot should be formed.

4. Next you should take hold of the dangling end and fold the end to create a lop that is pinched between your index finger and thumb. Basically, you will need to double the right side over itself to create a loop. After that is done, grab hold of the loop you just created between the collar points.

5. Next toy should take the ties left end over the front part of the bow.

6. Next you should create a new loop using the left end. After that is done, hold the newly created loop and double the end upon itself.

7. Position the newly created loop behind the loop in the front. It should face the opposite direction. Using your thumb, pinch the loops together. Put the 2nd loop into the knot that is behind the loop in the front. Push the end of that loop into the hole that is behind the front loop. On one side, the loop will be in the back and on the other it will be located on the front.

8. Pull the 2 loops together so that the knot will be tighten. Then straighten the bow tie.
