How to Tie a Four in Hand Knot

There are four common tie knots. The four in hand tie knot is the easiest knot to become familiar with. The four in hand knot is a small knot that is best used when you are wearing a shirt with a small collar. This type of knot is appropriate for most occasions. Keep in mind that this type of not will not look very good with shirts that have wide collars. The four in hand knot is also referred to as the school boy knot.

So how do you tie a four in hand knot?

First you should make sure the collar of the shirt is turned up. The top button of the shirt should be buttoned. Next you should put the tie around your neck. The wide end of your tie should be on the left and should be approximately twelve inches lower than the narrow end.

Next you will take the wider end and cross it over the end that is more narrow. Then take the wide end underneath the narrow end. Then once again, you will take the wider end and cross it over the end that is more narrow.

Next take a look at the loop that you just created. Take the wide end of the tie and put it through the bottom of the loop. Then take the wide end of the tie back down through the loop in the front. You should pull it down as far as it will go.

The final step is to hold the narrow end of the tie and push the knot back up it it snugly reaches the center part of the collar.
